Electric vehicles are growing in number every year, and are increasingly making sense financially as an alternative to internal combustion engine vehicles for around town travel.
The ultimate objective for those who own a PV system is to make the most of energy generated from the sun. With tariffs low in NZ for exported energy, increasing the self-use of energy generation increases the return on investment of a solar PV system. For example energy might be sold for 8c/kWh, but if used on site may avoid paying 25c/kWh.
Smart home load control
Evident’s smart home solutions automatic control loads such as hot water and space heating to consume power when excess is being generated from a solar system. EV charging is the next logical opportunity to increase self-use.

EV charging load control
Evident commissioned our first solar EV charging solution this week. The smart home solution monitors both energy consumed and energy generated from the solar system. The EV charger is controlled to limit the car’s charging to use only this excess electricity.
Of course if there was a need to charge an EV in a hurry, or at night the charger can be set to charge at its maximum rate by adjusting settings through the smartphone app, or automatically via a schedule.
